Researchers at Ryukoku University and Osaka Medical College in Japan have developed a self-powered remote-controlled pill endoscopy.
The siren, the device is called, is 1 cm wide and 4.5cm long and has a tail-like magnetic drive gear fins that allow it to "swim" in the digestive tract. It is controlled with a joystick and can be swallowed or inserted rectally. The siren can examine the entire human digestive tract from the esophagus to the colon in a few hours, taking two shots per second.The battery in the camera of the endoscope takes about eight to 10 hours, and the unit can move tens of centimeters per second outside the human body.
