Korrie Harper didn't think twice about bypassing hospitals in Shreveport for a birth center in Marshall, Texas, when her fifth child was born in June.

She's among Louisiana women opting for home births or the homelike setting of a birth center when a true at-home birth isn't possible because of state laws. Harper, of Shreveport, had her son Luke at EdenWay in Marshall. Midwife Charlotte Russell and senior apprentice midwife Jen Courtney, both of Shreveport, opened EdenWay nearly two years ago to serve women in north Louisiana and east Texas who don't want to give birth in a hospital.

A German aquarium’s new octopus oracle has gone out on one of her eight limbs by choosing underdog Canada to beat Germany in the opening match of the Women’s World Cup on Sunday.

Octopi at Sea Life’s seven other German aquaria were divided in their picks for Sunday’s match: Three chose Germany, one other took Canada and three made no choice at all.

The octopus with the most correct choices at the end of the nearly monthlong tournament will be anointed the next “official” oracle.
